Week #3: El Escape Cubano - Chapters 3 & 4

Our story continues where it left off last time. Miguel went home with his father after meeting with his friend Fabio. However, he was never able to talk with Fabio about his father´s planned escape. This is where we pick up with chapter 3.
The plot continues straight into chapter 4 where Miguel will face a future that he had no desire for and without someone he loves very dearly.

Now that you have read/listened to these 2 chapters, please comment on the bottom with a short 3-5 sentence summary of the chapters as well as with your personal reaction to the situation that Miguel faces and how this is emblematic of the conflict/problem faced by those who chose to flee Cuba.

Comments

  1. Miguel was very confused about where his parents wanted him to go and when and really the whole situation. His dad took him and his mom to the beach and didn't talk to his mom. When they get to the beach, Miguel notices Fabio and his family are both there as well. They have to prepare the raft quickly and quietly and they have to make it good enough to float on the water. Miguel starts to get nervous about the waves. Miguel's mom wants to stay in Cuba and keep Miguel with her but Miguel's dad wants them to come on the raft. The quarrel about who will fight and who will stay continues. They see the coast guard, and Miguel still thinks he can make his own decision. Everyone on the raft stays silent because of the coast guard. He is sad because no one went with his mom and now he is separated from her. Many faced the problem that some in their family wanted to go, but some wanted to stay, so they either got separated because of that or because of US border patrol controlling the immigration.

  2. Miguel is suddenly woken up in the middle of the night and is taken by his parents to the beach where he finds Fabio and his family. He is scared but doesn't want to show it because Gloria is there. Both families get on the raft they made after three hours of working on it. Miguel is afraid and doesn't want to go. He doesn't even know if the raft will float. In the end, he is crushed when his mother refuses to come along. In fact, he never wanted to go either but his father forced him to go. Miguel was forced to leave his only home and his mother to go to a strange new land. This was probably not the only family that faced a situation like this one. Not all were excited about leaving their homeland and illegally traveling to America. Some children like Miguel were forced into their situation by their parents without letting them have any say in the matter.

Week #7: El Escape Cubano - Chapters 10 & 11

Our main characters are now enduring the stark reality that their journey is falling apart, as inevitably as their raft is coming apart. Their is danger in the water and they have started to lose their minds (as was evidenced by Rita hallucinating that she saw Florida). This is where we pick up the story. The story has come to its concluding chapter. Will they all make it safely to Cuba and will they be allowed to stay. For some context, this story was written and set prior to the revocation of the "Wet Foot, Dry Foot" immigration policy. If they make it to land, they will be allowed to stay.  And that brings us to the end. I hope that you found this story interesting and enlightening, to a degree, about the struggles and plights of many real people who experienced journeys very similar to the one depicted in this story. Also, I hope that you found the work done to be helpful in oral recognition and comprehension. Please respond to the Google Classroom Question with
