  2. Miguel lives in a small apartment in Havana, Cuba, but cannot enter because his mom and dad are having a serious conversation about escaping, and are not happy with one another. Miguel knows this is illegal to enter into Florida, and he likes Cuba! His mom wants to stay in Cuba, and wants Miguel to stay, but Miguel believes it is his decision because he wants to stay in Cuba. Miguel doesn't know what to do, and does not want to enter the apartment. At the end of chapter 1, he has an idea. He goes to his friend Fabio's apartment, making being quiet because Fabio is angry. Miguel has a little bit of a crush on Gloria, Fabio's sister, and knows he has no chance because he doesn't look very good, and the age difference. Miguel asks Fabio to play baseball with him, but wants to talk to him really. Right when Miguel is going to tell Fabio, Miguel's father pulls up, telling him it's time to go. Miguel plans to tell Fabio tomorrow.

  3. Miguel lives in Cuba and he starts taking about where he lives and then tells the reader that he doesn't want to go inside his house because his parents are talking and they are not happy. His father is talking about how he wants to go to Cuba and he would take Miguel with him but Miguel's mother knows it is dangerous and doesn't want to go. Miguel overhears this and knows that his dad could get into trouble because it is illegal to leave Cuba; besides, he likes it there. He knows he has to talk to his friend Fabio. He goes to Fabio's house and when he is there, he sees Gloria who he likes but is disappointed because she is older than him so she wouldn't really notice him. I think that is kinda funny. While they play baseball, Miguel starts to tell Fabio why he came and then his dad shows up and tells him he has to come home right away. Miguel decides to tell Fabio the next day. I think it is kinda sad that he has to live with parents that don't get along the greatest and one of them is talking about taking hims and leaving the only home he knows and willingly leaving behind his mother who at this point, doesn't want to come. I also kind feel bad for the dad because if his situation in Cuba was not very good and he wanted to leave for his family's sake, that would also be hard for him to do.

Week #3: El Escape Cubano - Chapters 3 & 4

Our story continues where it left off last time. Miguel went home with his father after meeting with his friend Fabio. However, he was never able to talk with Fabio about his father´s planned escape. This is where we pick up with chapter 3. The plot continues straight into chapter 4 where Miguel will face a future that he had no desire for and without someone he loves very dearly. Now that you have read/listened to these 2 chapters, please comment on the bottom with a short 3-5 sentence summary of the chapters as well as with your personal reaction to the situation that Miguel faces and how this is emblematic of the conflict/problem faced by those who chose to flee Cuba.

Week #7: El Escape Cubano - Chapters 10 & 11

Our main characters are now enduring the stark reality that their journey is falling apart, as inevitably as their raft is coming apart. Their is danger in the water and they have started to lose their minds (as was evidenced by Rita hallucinating that she saw Florida). This is where we pick up the story. The story has come to its concluding chapter. Will they all make it safely to Cuba and will they be allowed to stay. For some context, this story was written and set prior to the revocation of the "Wet Foot, Dry Foot" immigration policy. If they make it to land, they will be allowed to stay.  And that brings us to the end. I hope that you found this story interesting and enlightening, to a degree, about the struggles and plights of many real people who experienced journeys very similar to the one depicted in this story. Also, I hope that you found the work done to be helpful in oral recognition and comprehension. Please respond to the Google Classroom Question with
